Report unsafe products

Businesses that place potentially unsafe foodstuffs (harmful to health or unfit for consumption, as defined in Regulation (EC) No. 178/2002) on the market or hold them in storage are required, pursuant to Article 19 of Regulation (EC) No. 178/2002, to notify the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA). The business is responsible for the initial assessment of the non-compliance and for submitting the notification.

Reporting Guide for Unsafe food

The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) has developed a reporting guide that businesses can use to assess whether a food product is unsafe (harmful to health or unfit for consumption) and whether a notification must be submitted. The reporting guide for unsafe food can be downloaded.

Food safety

It is mandatory to submit a notification in the event of unsafe food. This is to prevent consumers from becoming ill or suffering other harm as a result of consuming the product. Notifications must be submitted via the NVWA website

For assistance or advice, you can contact the NVWA Customer Contact Centre by telephone at 0900 – 0388.
